UID Project - Will it be as successful as anticipated?

UID project is a large scale project initiated in 2009 by the government of India aimed at provided a unique 12-digit number to all Indians. The UIDAI, which is responsible for implementing this, is chaired by Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys. The initial budget allocated for this is around 3000 crore.

The UID number (now AADHAR) will be stored in centralized database and will be linked to biometric data of individual. It is unique and robust enough to eliminate large number of duplicate and fake identities in government and private databases. The UIDAI is positive about it and expect that it would address issues such as illegal immigration and terrorist activities. But will it actually prove to be a grand success as anticipated?
