“The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”- Albert Einstein.

Everybody is inspired by someone for any innovation which contradicts this famous quote. What is your perception, your take?

  1. Creativity is a function of perceptiveness; what you see as creative may unoriginal or hackneyed for others. Hence creativity lies in the mind of the innovator and is expressed through appreciation or acknowledgement.

Albert Einstein the scientist may be a visionary, but his greatness in creativity would never have been appreciated had he hidden his resources and deprived the world of his concepts in physics (quantum theory, particle theory & photoelectric effect)

Though in the era Einstein survived, the world wasn't privy to the concepts of knowledge domains. Information technology of the modern era has ensured knowledge sharing at a different paradigm. In this era creativity has to originate by sharing rather than isolating information. With each passing day innovations are becoming more and more complex and it is not possible for an individual to isolate his resource and still achieve something unique. Team work is the order of the day wherein the dynamics of knowledge sharing is a critical component for success.

Hence the realities of the modern era coupled with high speed communication technologies have made the world a global village. Although Einstein may be the product of the Great Man Theory, the modern era believes in nurturing innovation through sharing. Hence I feel that Einstein’s concept “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”- Albert Einstein is outdated, lest we know SHARING IS CARING.

  2. React and create are two words which can be derived from the word creativity. For me, any surprised reaction for any creation can be termed as creativity or creative. Einstein may have hidden his resources to be creative but for me to work out with the available resources in the best possible manner is being creative. After all the geniuses that Einstein has produced probably this is the only statement which some people may differ with.
To be creative you don’t always have to think out of the box. In fact simple solutions are now a days more creative. In order to be creative or look different from others we generally forget the main objective of doing that thing and end up making fun for ourselves.
Creativity is not a ginne who can be mastered by one. It is something which is extensively present in each one of us. We just to realize this fact. An Einstein like creative genius is present in all of us but we spend time on silly things and keep on hiding our sources in order to have something different rather than going for simplicity.
Any piece of work can be classified as creative by just changing the perception of viewing it. Creativity has nothing at all to do with self-expression or flamboyancy. Aside from the simple ability to create things, the most important feature of creativity is a highly developed perception filter that is somewhat less common than we’re led to believe.
Creative – I v create, or simply everything what I and we create is defined as creative.
Though I may not have produced the most creative of the article on this topic but I am really happy for getting the only real life chance to differ from Einstein. With due respects to the creator of theory of relativity I would say that even geniuses can go wrong sometimes.

  3. Creativity is internal in nature. It is the expression of one’s thoughts, perception and dreams. It depicts how a person see everything around us. Nature is the main source of all inventions and is still unfolding..It is hardly possible to hide the source of creativity...The way we observe things gives a trigger to the creative process..We all see so many fruits everyday but only Newton could able to come up with the Laws of gravity....It is very difficult to say at what context Eienstein had made this quote...but we should not take it literally...He might have wants to mean that creativity will loose its aura of exclusivity if it’s source is not hided.

  4. The creativity is an art of doing common things in new way which is admired by others. However to be creative you don’t need to invent something new. Creative person takes somebody’s original idea &applies it in new way or at new field. He or she may even refine original idea in such a way that it becomes a completely new one. Also he or she may this new refined idea in original or new place. For example, Pedal Motorcycle is a bike which has pedals as in cycle apart from engine to drive it. These pedals serve two purposes. First being as kick to start vehicle and secondly as back up option when petrol gets over. There isn't any invention in it. Its creativity. The people knew that such idea was inspired from cycle and motor bike but what mattered is that somebody at least used existing thing in new way & made a useful product
But we won’t give credit of this creativity to Frenchman Ernest Michaux who invented pedal or scientist who invented engine who are the real source of creativity. The credit for creativity goes to the person who first applies the idea in different way. The credit of pedal motorcycle goes to Frenchman Perreaux who first designed pedal motorcycle in 1868. You may think that sources of creativity are known i.e. inventors of Pedals and engines. But they are not counted when you give credit of creativity because creativity is not about invention but innovation. So creativity is recognized even though source are known. One may not need to hide the sources in this case.
However this quote reminds Pablo Picasso quote, “Good artist Borrows and Great artist steals". For e.g. Kinetics which made LUNA TFR similar to Perreaux Pedal Motorcycle would have enjoyed credit if the source (now here source is original creator Perreaux) was not known to people. So, in this case one needs to be kept hidden.
So according Einstein’s quote is not based on both situation and is not always true.

  5. AS With most other advice it always depends upon how you take the advice.
Talking of this quote it remind’s me of another one”Great artist takes inspiration from great idea’s”.
A great artist is not only one who develop everything by himself but also he may take inspiration from someone idea’s and develop it such that it look better than the original idea .It doesn’t mean you should copy the idea because everything had been thought of before and there’s nothing like it involves a moment of magical creation when the incredible ideas appears out of thin air.
All ideas have been thought before and all artists, especially the most brilliant, have their sources of inspiration.
So i do believe in this quote of Einstein that “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”

  6. You may have noticed that the moment you get a hint/way to proceed towards a soln. for a problem, our mind starts to think in the perspective of the hint or some other way similar to it. This limits the scope of creativity. Take a simple e.g. of selecting variables: Most of us end up taking variables as “X” (coz of the books we refer and people who teach us mostly take variables as X or Y).
This same inertia of our mind, limits our creativity to.
The above analysis is applicable for situations that are unique or inventions that have never manifested.
Hence, if you are able to hide your sources (ideas/ways that you know to solve or reach your target) you end up thinking with a fresh and hence a creative manner.
But if by creativity, we mean to create something better than what it was before (up gradation or rearrangement)
For the above mentioned kind, exposing one’s mind to other sources gives them an idea on recreating the same thing in a more efficient way.
Anyway that leads to more efficient or less inefficient living as compared to times when it didn’t existed is better!
Phenomena: The People who create in a unique way are more valued than the ones who make derivatives (upgrades, applications, things better than the last in use) as they are considerably rarer to find than the later ones.
